About the Nepali language

Nepal, surrounded by the incredible Himalayas, is home to 28,170,000 people who speak a variety of languages. The principle language is Nepali, into which the Bible was first translated in 1821. Please explore this site to find out more about the Bible in Nepali. Nepali language originally known as Khas Kura, Parbate Bhasa or Gorkhali, is an Indo-Aryan language. It is the official language of Nepal. It is also spoken in various parts of India, particularly by Indian Gorkha, and by a significant number of Bhutanese and some Burmese people. In India, Nepali language is listed in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of India having an official status in the Indian state of Sikkim and in West Bengal's Darjeeling district.

More about us

Nepal Bible Society (NBS) is an interconfessional Christian Non Government Organisation, which, although started on 01 November 1975 / 15 Katik 2032, could be registered with the government of Nepal only on 21 March 2007 (2063/12/07) due to the prejudices or lack of confidence of the Panchayat regime and of the successive governments. The main functions of the NBS is to translate, publish and distribute Bibles and related materials and to make them available in different languages, formats and sizes to meet people’s Scripture needs. NBS is a Member of the United Bible Societies (UBS), A World Fellowship of Bible Societies.
